Tips For Handling Unexpected Problems on a Holiday

Holidays should be a time to relax and leave behind all the worries of your everyday world. But sometimes it isn`t always that easy. So often we see stories on the news of holidaymakers whose plans have been spoiled by situations out of their control, floods and volcanoes for example. To ensure you make the most of your holiday, it`s wise to take on board the following advice.

Natural disasters can happen at any time and anywhere, sometimes with weeks of warning, often without. Volcanoes, hurricanes and earthquakes can all mean you need to take care, listen and follow directions from the local authorities. You will need to make sure you have access to television or radio to keep up to date with any evacuation order. You may need to leave all your possessions, you may need to travel away from where you`re staying and make unexpected travel arrangements. Make sure you are up-to-date with all the risks and what you need to do before you travel. For instance:-

In cases of volcano eruption; evacuate immediately away from the blast, remembering mudflows can travel faster than you. Protect eyes, mouth and nose from the ash, eg using a damp cloth.

In cases of earthquake; drop to the floor, take cover and hold on until the shaking stops. Do not use naked flames in case of gas.

In cases of hurricane; if not evacuated, stay indoors on the lowest level, lie on the floor. If there is a lull, it could be the eye of the storm, winds may pick up again.

One of the biggest problems is that many people go on holiday with only just enough money and nothing extra for unexpected problems. Whatever the emergency situation you can be pretty sure that additional expenses will be occurred – whether its travel to another place or extra accommodation costs. Insurance, whilst replacing certain things, like personal possessions, only pays out after a period of time; you will need to pay out for certain items immediately until they can be reimbursed. Travel insurance is a must for all holiday giving protection against costs due to illness (less than 60 countries offer reciprocal health care for travellers from the UK), loss and theft etc. But most standard travel insurance policies do not protect against `Acts of God`. Even an upgraded policy that does cover `Acts of God` will only cover unpredicted events. It is vital that you check with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) before you travel to clarify any risks or warnings about t! he area you are travelling to. Whilst you are away they offer consular assistance 24 hours a day to help with emergency situations.

Unexpected events may change the nature of your holiday but you can be prepared and plan ahead. So whether you are staying in cheap hotels in Cardiff or luxuriating in resorts at the far side of the world, know what you can control and what you can`t and make the best of your holiday.
